, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will continue in his position as the investigation continues. and all of that as the pentagon digs through 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other communications, many with kelley over a two-year period. >>> each revelation brings 100 new questions and my colleague chris lawrence joins me from the pentagon to

department did. that's the kind of question they're going to ask david petraeus. but here is the problem with bengha benghazi. it was a huge cia base. and what were they doing down there? were they simply buying up arms off the local market, surface to air missiles? even some are arguing that this attack on september 11th had something to do with an arms deal that went bad and there are rumor that is possibly this cia unit or somebody down there was buy i buying arms to send to syria. i frankly discount them all. i see no evidence of it. somebody has to give us the answers. this is why this controversy is carried on so long because there's absolutely no clarity. we, as americans, want to know why four american diplomats were killed. >> let's specifically -- there is word that the people on the ground in benghazi, libya, cried out for help and help did not come. >> i think it's clear that the ambassador, who was murdered, did express doubts to washington about the security. there was no backup. the problem is, if there was a seven-hour gun battle for that consulate, that's not fast enough

, and nicholas kons skoir of "the new york times." david petraeus resigned as cia director on friday after reports of an extramarital affair and a host of questions remain about the investigation that toppled one of the country's top national security officials. lawmakers in both parties say the fbi failed in its duty to report on the secretive investigation earlier in the process. now, before we get into the debate, here are some of the key allegations and facts about this unusual investigation. first, several months ago, government officials tell nbc news that fbi investigators responded to a complaint about anonymous e-mails sent to jill kelly, a 37-year-old volunteer liaison to mcdill air force base in tampa. kelly and her husband were friends with petraeus and his wife. the fbi began by investigating whether those e-mails constituted harassment. officials told nbc news. then the bureau subsequently found that petraeus' biographer, paula broadwell, was sending those anonymous e-mails that law enforcement officials had dealt with. the investigation also determined she was having an affa
